He is convinced that the understanding and management of culture is the key to improved organisational and personal performance. From 1980 onwards he lived and worked in many different places, including Africa and Asia, Russia, East and West Europe and the USA, for international organisations, both in private, public and not-for-profit sectors. Particularly during the first ten years of his career Gert Jan was involved in activities with a technical focus, like irrigation. He discovered in practice how important it is for good performance and success to connect people from different professional and cultural backgrounds. By now Gert Jan has working experience in 38 countries. He is fluent in Dutch English and French, and speaks basic Indonesian. He did assignments for, amongst others, ABN-AMRO Bank, Accenture, Arcelor, Baxter, BIAC, Commerzbank, Deutsche Bahn, CRH, DSM, IBM, IKEA, ING Bank, KBC Bank, Linklaters, Nationale Nederlanden, Philips, Quintiles and Unilever. Gert Jan was born in the Netherlands in 1950. He graduated at the University of Leyden in social anthropology and at the management training institute of the Dutch Employers' Organisation. During 2 years he was a board-member of IRIC (Institute for Research on International Co-operation), the research institute of Prof. Geert Hofstede. In 2006 Gert Jan got his post graduate certificate in SKM Coaching, SKM stands for ‘Self Knowledge Method’ and is based on the Valuation Theory in psychology as developed by Prof. Hubert Hermans. This method has proved to be very successful for people who want to get a better understanding of their own behaviour, also in different cultural situations.
