She studied French as a foreign language, lived in France and in the USA and has been working in an international business environment for many years. When working for French companies during her seven-year stay in France (1989-1996), she became interested in the way different cultures manage their companies. In 1995 she successfully completed the post-graduate DESS (Diplôme d’Etudes Supérieures Spécialisées) “Stratégies de Communication Internationale” at the University of Burgundy in Dijon, France. In 1994 -1995 she did research in the field of intercultural management in France and the Netherlands, focusing on the consequences of cultural differences in management and work related values between the two countries. Back in the Netherlands she founded her own consulting company and worked freelance as a specialist on French-Dutch intercultural management.

In 1998 she joined itim with a special focus on the consumer goods industry and French companies in the Netherlands. She developed for Philips large intercultural training and consultancy projects throughout the world and conducts courses for Ikea, Numico, Reed Elsevier, Decathlon (France), Lem (Switzerland), Foseco (Germany) on a regular bases. She lectures in Management Development Programs at Templeton College (Oxford Business School) and at the Academy for Management in Groningen, the Netherlands.

Her fields of expertise are Intercultural Communication, Intercultural (Virtual) Teamwork, and Intercultural Project Management.

She is a member of SIETAR, the Society for Intercultural Training, Education and Research, since 1997. In addition to her native language Dutch, Nelke speaks fluent French and English and has a fair understanding of German.
