Geert Hofstede

Geert Hofstede does not work within itim, but we nevertheless consider him to be a key person at itim. Not only because we make use of models, which are based on and derived from his research, but also because we are the only training and consultancy group which he actively supports. As his work is in the public domain, everybody can claim to use it. Without Hofstede's guidance, however, most practitioners develop only a superficial understanding of his work.

Geert has a Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering and a doctorate in Social Psychology . In 1965 he joined IBM as a trainer in the international Executive Development Department. Towards the end of the sixties and the beginning of the seventies he started with a research within IBM’s offices all over the world on employee attitude surveys. The results of these surveys and more research throughout the seventies were published in 1980 in Hofstede’s Culture's Consequences. It is this book that set the path for all Hofstede and itim ‘s activities in the field of cultural differences.

Nowadays Professor Hofstede is retired, but still an active presenter at conferences and universities, although he is more selective in the acceptance of invitations.
